About
Hi, I'm Dr. Aileen Kucsera, a licensed clinical psychologist and physician assistant who works with adults and couples. My approach brings together psychological depth, medical understanding, trauma-informed care, and contemplative practice.
I value what science can teach us about healing while also honoring meaning, mystery, and your own inner wisdom. I hope this page gives you a sense of both my training and what it feels like to work together.

About me
I've never believed that healing follows a straight line. It feels much more like walking a labyrinth, winding, sometimes doubling back, often surprising us, but always inviting us deeper. My own path has unfolded much the same way. For nearly a decade, I worked as a physician assistant in primary care. While I loved medicine, I found myself increasingly drawn to something beyond diagnosis and treatment. I was fascinated by people's stories and the ways relationships, loss, trauma, identity, and life experiences shaped both emotional and physical health. Over time, I noticed myself almost envious of the conversations my patients would have with their therapists. I realized that what I wanted most was to sit with people more deeply, to understand them, and to help them heal in a way that honored the connection between mind and body.
That realization led me to pursue a doctorate in clinical psychology through the Stanford-PGSP Psy.D. Consortium. My clinical training included working with people living with chronic illness and chronic pain, trauma and PTSD, substance use disorders, grief, anxiety, and depression, across the Veterans Affairs healthcare system, community mental health, and academic medical settings, including Stanford's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. I completed my postdoctoral residency at the San Francisco VA, where I specialized in trauma, substance use, couples psychotherapy, and psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy.
My work has also been shaped by experiences outside the therapy room. Like many of the people I work with, I've experienced seasons of uncertainty, sought my own therapy, and learned that growth rarely comes from having all the answers. My mindfulness and meditation practice, along with the profound experience of becoming a mother, have deepened my appreciation for the complexity of being human and strengthened my trust in the wisdom that can emerge when we slow down and listen.
My approach
I believe healing happens in the presence of understanding and care, and when we learn to trust the natural intelligence within ourselves. My role is to support you in reconnecting with your own capacity for insight, resilience, and growth through therapy that is evidence-based, attuned, and compassionate.
My clinical work integrates ACT, DBT, IFS, EFT, mindfulness-based therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and mind-body and somatic practices. I bring these approaches together in a way that is collaborative, embodied, relational, and responsive to the whole person. At the same time, I believe therapy is more than a set of techniques. Healing often asks us to make room for grief, identity, spirituality, the body, relationships, and the ongoing process of becoming more honest and connected with ourselves.

What therapy with me is like
I aim to create a space where you can slow down, tell the truth about your experience, and explore what may be happening beneath the surface of your life. I bring authenticity and a sense of humor to the work. You will be sitting with a real person in the room, someone who is engaged, curious, compassionate, and willing to be human with you. We may be talking about pain, grief, fear, or change, but warmth, humor, and honest connection can help us get closer to what is true.
In sessions, we may talk things through, notice what is happening in your body, explore old patterns, practice new skills, or make space for grief and uncertainty. I work collaboratively and at a pace that respects your readiness. Healing is not something to force. It unfolds when there is enough safety, honesty, and understanding for something new to emerge.
